About Mark

Biography

Mark Zilner, the owner, President and Chief Executive Officer of nationally-known Diamond Pharmacy Services and its related companies, all based in Indiana, is one of the inductees of the Indiana County Business Hall of Fame, Class of 2022.

Mark was born and raised in Indiana, a son of Diamond pharmacy business owners Gib and Joan Zilner, graduated from Indiana Area Senior High School and earned a degree in pharmacy from Northeastern University.

He joined his parents’ business as the director of operations at age 24 in 1991 and has overseen its growth as a dominant force in national institutional pharmacy service over the past three decades.

The standalone pharmacy that Mark’s parents bought in 1970, Diamond Drug Store on the 600 block of Philadelphia Street, soon was complemented by Diamond Pharmacy Services. Mark’s dedication to growing relationships with corrections departments and medical groups led the pharmacy services division to become the nation’s largest provider to correctional facilities by 2001. Today, Diamond has clients in 47 states.

Other spinoff businesses under the Diamond banner include RemedyRepack Inc., an FDA-certified repackager of prescription medication; Diamond Distribution, a wholesale division set up in 2005 to provide larger orders of stock to customers; SapphireHealth LLC, an electronic health record software company begun in 2009; and InnovaHealth LLC, a retail mail-order pharmacy and healthcare platform also started in 2009.

The company also has grown from that single downtown drugstore to include outlets along Oakland Avenue, a sprawling multi-building administrative and distribution complex in Indiana County Commerce Park in White Township, as well as satellite locations in Lancaster, PA, Leesport, PA and Westerville, OH.

Mark is credited with developing a culture of caring in the Diamond divisions, where administrators and employees have fostered an environment of kindness, giving and charity on an ongoing basis. They support one another in times of struggle and assist community organizations in times of need, including the YMCA Miracle League, Alice Paul House, American Cancer Society, Four Footed Friends, and Indiana County Community Action Program. In 2020, they took over the Angels’ Wings program as the primary sponsor and organizer.

The Zilner family and the companies have partnered with Indiana County agencies in a mission to educate the public of the dangers of prescription drug abuse, co-sponsored “take back” events to collect and dispose of unused and unwanted medications to curb abuse and raised funds for recovery programs.

Under Mark’s leadership, Diamond Drugs Inc. has grown its workforce to almost 1,100 people and is the third-largest employer in Indiana County. With revenue reported at $391 million in 2017, Diamond was ranked No. 13 on a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette list of top privately held companies in the region. They have been named to the Top 500 and Top 5000 Fastest Growing Independently Owned Companies. In 2019, Diamond was awarded Employer of the Year for Indiana County by the Tri-County Workforce Investment Board, Industry Partner of the Year by the Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association, and they received honorary recognition from the Chestnut Ridge Chapter of the American Red Cross. Pittsburgh Business Times honored Diamond in 2018 with the Family Business Award.

Mark has recently received the Pittsburgh Smart 50 Award from the Smart Business Network in 2021. He was named to the Top 100 People in Business by Pennsylvania Business Central and was recognized among the Top Healthcare Leaders list for 2019 by the International Forum on Advancements in Healthcare. In 2017, Mark was the Northeastern School of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumni of the Year. He also served on the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy as well as the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce and the IUP Research Institute.
