Biography
Stephen Wolfe is the president and chief executive officer at Indiana Regional Medical Center and has led the hospital’s modernization campaign and its mission to remain an independent, community-based medical center.
Wolfe is a native of Central Pennsylvania, and earned degrees in pharmacy at Temple University in 1986 and in public administration at Penn State University in 1994. He joined the administration of Clearfield Hospital in 1992 and served as CEO from 1995 to 1999, when he was named to lead IRMC.
Under Wolfe’s 17-plus years of leadership, IRMC has achieved dramatic improvements in its performance as measured in finance, service, quality, growth and people. The hospital has opened a cancer center, a new surgical center and an urgent care clinic at his direction. These facilities include the Indiana at Chestnut Ridge Ambulatory Care and Urgent Care Center in Burrell Township, and the Herbert Hanna Oncology Center, the S&T Wellness Center, the Percutaneous Cardiac Intervention (PCI) Program, the Bork Emergency Center, the M. Dorcas Clark Women’s Imaging Center, the Human Motion Institute and the First Commonwealth Cardiac Catheterization Center in Indiana. His administration and workforce are developing a culture for performance improvement, and IRMC has embarked on the $50 million Centennial Building Project to enhance the operating suite, ambulatory care and intensive care units.
During Wolfe’s tenure, IRMC has become known as a progressive facility, a community asset and a positive feature in Indiana County’s efforts to attract new business to the area. IRMC has been named several times to the lists of the “Best Places to Work” in Pennsylvania, based on surveys of the hospital’s physicians and other employees. Under Wolfe’s tenure, the hospital also has been named to Fortune magazine’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in the U.S.
Regionally, Wolfe has served since 1995 as founder, president and chairman of the Pennsylvania Mountains Health Alliance, and is Chair CEO of the new parent entity Pennsylvania Mountains Care Network a new coalition of Indiana, Punxsutawney and Clarion hospitals.
In service to the state, Wolfe was appointed by Gov. Ed Rendell to the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council and was a short-list candidate for Secretary of Health under Gov. Tom Corbett.
In the Indiana County community, Wolfe has served on the board of the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, and as the chairman in 1995 and 1996; the board of the Indiana County Development Corporation; and the board of the IUP Research Institute. He served on the Indiana County United Way board and was chairman of the 2000 community campaign.
Wolfe has served as an elder, president and personnel committee chairman at Graystone Presbyterian Church and currently serves as Chair of Finance for Grace United Methodist Church, is a co-founder and board chairman for the Seeds of Faith Christian Academy, and is a founder and chairman of the Indiana Experiment, a Christian men’s group. Through the Leader’s Circle Program, Wolfe was named the Civic Leader of the Year in 2006. The Laurel Highlands Council of Boy Scouts of America presented the Distinguished Citizen award to Wolfe in 2009.
Steve is married to his wife, Karen, for 26 years and they are proud parents of five children.
